What is Quilling?

Quilling is the art of rolling, shaping, and gluing strips of paper to create a decorative design that is affixed to furniture, greeting cards, and picture frames, for example. The name quilling is thought to come from the bird quills that were used to roll the strips of paper when the craft originated. Today, there are quilling tools available at craft shops and Amazon, and toothpicks can also be used.

Quilling is a centuries-old art form practiced on several continents. While popular opinion says that quilling originated in Egypt, its origins are truly unknown. It is said to be inspired by Egyptian gold filigree. Today, this is craft is most popular in Western countries, such as in the US and Europe. Its popularity can be attributed to its being simple to do and affordable.
